I’ve been a designer for over a decade, and I can tell you that one of the toughest things has always been finding the best photos for my design projects. The image you use means everything, and it’s a no-brainer that images get expensive. When you can find stock photos for free, it’s a great way to keep more profits in your pockets. That’s why I put together a collection of the 10 best free stock photo sites for designers.


Free Stock Photos

GraphicStock has a program, where you can get a free trial for 7 days. That’s great if you’re looking for free stock images and graphics in a pinch. They also run regular promotions, where you can get a huge discount on their yearly subscriptions. Picjumbo has a fantastic collection of candid images that really set the tone for a strong visual design. If you’re looking for something special, you’ll want to check them out. I didn’t even search very far. I found the image above 3 down from the top on the home page!

Free Images


Formerly, it’s now called Free Images, and it has a wealth of free stock photos and images. I searched for web design, and the image above came up.



Pixabay is another go-to site for all of my free stock image needs. If I need a free photo in a pinch, Pixabay is a great choice. I searched for a storm, and the image above showed up.



Morguefile has been around for as long as I can remember. it has always been a great resource for photos that look like they are from an average person. You’ll be surprised what you can find there. I searched for hills, and the image above was one of the results.

Unsplash is a favorite among designers. It has an amazing collection of high resolution photos, which are random, fun, and full of life. 10 new photos are uploaded every 10 days. What a collection. Visit Unsplash for great images.


pexels - free stock photo sites

Pexels is another site that features a great collection of killer free stock photos. Whether you go there looking for something, or you just visit for inspiration, Pexels is a great resource. Imagine this tomato image used for a restaurant.

Death to Stock Photos

Death to Stock Photos is a unique concept, where their free system sends you a pack of free images in your email each month. This is great for building a nice collection of beautiful stock images.

IM Free


IM Creator is a free website builder. In an attempt to attract more designers, they set up a collection of free images and resources that are useful for designers. You can use them in your projects on IM Creator, or you can download them for your own projects. You can find this image here.



Superfamous is an interesting collection of unique high resolution images. These are great for textures and backgrounds, especially for websites. They can be found here.


This collection of free stock photo sites will enable you to find a great image for just about any type of project. If you’re not a photographer, or your project doesn’t have enough of a budget to hire one or buy stock photos, you’ll be surprised at what you can find on these website.
